Is Nutro WSAVA-Approved?

WSAVA does not approve, certify, or endorse any dog food brand. No such list exists. What "WSAVA-approved" actually refers to is whether a manufacturer satisfies the five questions the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee tells owners to ask. Nutro meets 4 of the 5, so it sits between the fully compliant brands and those that meet none. It substantiates its diets through formulation to AAFCO profiles rather than feeding trials, and typically costs $55 – $70 per month for a 50 lb adult dog.

AAFCO substantiation

Formulated to meet AAFCO profiles

Nutro substantiates adequacy by formulation, meaning the recipe is calculated and laboratory-analysed against AAFCO nutrient profiles rather than fed to dogs in a trial. This is legal, common, and weaker evidence than a feeding trial.

What Nutro actually contains

Guaranteed-analysis figures are label minimums, shown separately by food type because a 10%-moisture kibble and a 78%-moisture canned food are not comparable as-fed.

FormProductsCrude proteinCrude fat (median)Energy (median)
dry8922–36% (median 26%)14%3,465 kcal/kg

We hold 6 wet Nutro products but their published moisture figures are not physically possible for canned food, so we are not reporting nutrition for them rather than repeating numbers we do not trust.

What Nutro costs

Across 92 priced products the median works out at $2.92 per pound, with most falling between $2.50 and $3.41. That is below the $3.74 median for dry dog food across every brand we track.

Bagged retail pricing only. Packages under 2 lb are excluded because their per-pound figures are unreliable.

Strengths

  • Meets 4 of WSAVA's 5 questions through Mars Petcare's named PhD nutrition scientists
  • Its FAQ lists owned dry-food factories in Henderson NC and Victorville CA, though a February 2025 report says Henderson is making Iams again
  • Publishes testing, HACCP and on-site quality experts for all Nutro facilities

Watch-outs

  • The FAQ says all recipes are "formulated to meet" AAFCO profiles, with no feeding-test claim
  • No Nutro page says who formulates the recipes, so the credit comes from Mars Petcare's staff
  • Costs more than Pedigree or Iams
  • Named in 10 reports in the FDA's 2019 DCM update. The FDA did not establish that any food caused the disease

Who Nutro suits
